Synthesis of methyl myristate

 

Methyl myristate is present in the roots of violets. It is a colorless liquid or a white waxy solid. The product is insoluble in water and soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol. It has a honey-like and iris-like aroma. Methyl myristate is obtained by esterification of myristic acid with methanol. 2 kg of tetradecanoic acid and 3 L of methanol were mixed, 200 ml of sulfuric acid was added, and the mixture was heated under reflux for 10 h. After recovering excess methanol, the reaction was poured into cold water to remove acidity. It was washed successively with 10% sodium carbonate and water, and distilled under reduced pressure to obtain about 1.5 kg of the finished product.
